Gentle guidance and personal care when it matters most.

We understand how difficult it can be to make arrangements during a time of loss. That’s why we’re here to make things as simple and gentle as possible. We can help with everything from immediate care and bringing your loved one into our care, to planning a personal and meaningful service. Whether you prefer something traditional or something quiet and private, we’ll guide you through each step with patience, clarity, and compassion—always taking the time to listen to what feels right for you.

What Happens When Someone Dies?

The death of someone close can be an overwhelming experience. It’s natural to feel unsure about what to do first. We’re here to guide you through each step with care and clarity.

If the death occurs at home

If expected, contact the GP or district nurse. They will visit to confirm the death.

Once the doctor has been notified, you can call us and we will come to bring your loved one into our care.

If the death occurs in hospital or a care home

Staff will notify the doctor and begin the process of issuing medical paperwork.

The case will be passed to a Medical Examiner, an independent doctor who reviews all deaths to ensure the cause is accurate and explained.

Once the Medical Examiner has completed their review and spoken with the next of kin, they will release the paperwork to the Register Office.

If the death was sudden or unexpected

The emergency services must be called, and often the coroner will become involved.

If the coroner takes jurisdiction, the death cannot be registered until their enquiries are complete.

We will stay in close contact with you throughout, explaining each stage and liaising with the coroner’s office on your behalf.

Registering the death

Once the Medical Examiner (or coroner, if involved) has completed their part, the paperwork is sent directly to the local Register Office.

You will then be invited to make an appointment to register the death.

We can guide you through what details you’ll need to provide and help you book the appointment if needed.

Next steps

After registration, the Register Office will provide the paperwork needed for the funeral to go ahead. At that point, we’ll meet with you to talk through the type of service you’d like and help arrange everything in line with your wishes.

"Ryan and his team were truly incredible in a time of great sadness. He was compassionate and kind to us as a family and really did everything to make sure my dad had a beautiful final journey. Nothing was too much trouble, the communication and handling of such an unfamiliar process was a huge weight off my shoulders. Thank you so much."

'“I can honestly say the level of attention to detail, empathy and sheer ambition that’s been visible with working with Evans & Son has made what is a tough time into something very special at the same time. After each interaction with Ryan my mum was left feeling listened to, comforted and very relaxed which has made this process that bit easier. Can’t recommend the team here enough and very grateful our town has such an amazing service that is needed at such a tough time as when people pass. Thanks to Ryan and his team! Meant a lot.”

FAQs

What should I do when someone passes away?

If your loved one has passed away at home, contact their GP or the out-of-hours doctor first. Once a medical professional has verified the death, you can call us at any time—day or night—and we’ll gently guide you through the next steps and bring your loved one into our care.

Do we have to have a traditional funeral?

Not at all. Every farewell can be as personal, simple, or traditional as you wish. We’ll talk through what matters most to you and help create something that feels right—whether that’s a quiet direct cremation or a more formal service with readings, music, and tributes.

How much does a funeral cost?

The cost depends on the type of service and choices you make, but we’ll always be open and clear from the beginning. We can provide a full quote with no obligation and guide you through options to suit your budget, without ever compromising on care or dignity.
